We’re very excited to tell you about the 2016 Old Florida Outdoor Festival sponsored by the City of Apopka! Keep reading for your chance to win a family four pack of some really sweet tickets! Last year, we posted some information and even got a chance to check it out for ourselves. You can read all about our 2015 Old Florida Outdoor Festival experience on our site as well. In case you missed it, or just don’t have time to go back and read our previous post, the Old Florida Outdoor Festival was ranked as one of the very best family entertainment values of 2015!
So what’s the big deal? Think about your favorite country music concert, bounce houses, a BBQ competition, a chili cook-off, tons of community vendors, shooting competitions, livestock show, and fishing demos. Now put them all in the same place in one of the most beautiful venues we have ever seen, and you have the Old Florida Outdoor Festival! Ok, so that may be a bit of information overload so I’ll break it down:
For three days this February 12th through the 14th, the Apopka Amphitheater transforms into an amazing venue with some top-notch country music headliners. This year Parmalee with be performing Friday evening, with Chris Young following up Saturday night. Drake White will be performing Sunday night. What’s incredible is that you have a choice of purchasing actual assigned seats, or just chilling out in the massive general admission area. Be sure to bring a chair or blanket if you go the general admission route. Rest assured the acoustics are incredible, and no matter what your vantage point, you’ll have a great view!
So what can you expect when you actually get to the Old Florida Outdoor Festival? Well for starters, you’ll see tons of parking all around the amphitheater. (You’ll want to snap a photo of your car, and use the GPS data tagged in the photo to find your way back at the end of the night.) There is so much to do and see once you get inside, you can wander around for quite a while before you have had a chance to see everything.
One of the very best things about the Old Florida Outdoor festival is the kids zone. Unlike other events and venues, the rides are completely free! That’s right, no extra tickets, no additional fees, just bounce houses, rock walls, zip lines and games for the kids to play! It was a great surprise for us last year that really helped out quite a bit. Once the kids are exhausted, you can relax with some of the friendliest community vendors we have ever come across. There were animal rescue groups, some craft vendors, but mostly local business folks looking to help support the Old Florida Outdoor Festival! Outside you can checkout some sweet new cars from Mullinax Ford, or even a few RVs from Giant Recreation World!
Now at some events gunshots would be a bit alarming. Not so much at the Old Florida Outdoor Festival! On the outskirts of the venue, there are shooting demonstrations throughout the event. Don’t worry, it’s completely safe, and very heavily monitored by the local police department. In fact, if you want to get your youngsters involved, they can try their hand at shooting real rifles with actual professional instructors with a one to one ratio in a completely safe environment. There is an age minimum and maximum, and guardians must be present. Put it this way, I had a 2.5 year old as well as my niece with me last year, and felt at ease in this environment.
If shooting really isn’t your thing you can also checkout the DocDogs diving competition at the Old Florida Outdoor Festival. This is the first time we have ever seen an event like this up close and personal, and my little guy loved it! These amazing trained dogs run off a platform in an attempt to get the best distance while chasing after one of their most beloved toys. This also means that this is a dog friendly event so you can feel free to bring your four-legged family members along as well. There are plenty of water spots for them to cool off and have a drink. If you’re an animal lover, you can also checkout their first annual livestock show!
Are you getting hungry yet? You should be! Saturday features a BBQ competition. The smells will probably drive you a bit crazy, so you’ll want to swing by a few of the actual food vendors while you’re there. Some of them are entered in the BBQ competition and some are local restaurants selling delicious everything! Last year we went on Sunday, which features a chili cook off. Believe it or not, it was the first chili event we had ever been to and were stuffed to the brim with all sorts of chili. Three bean chili, 12 alarm chili, venison chili…. Just think Bubba from the movie Forest Gump, but with chili instead! The best part is that it was free, and you got to place your vote for your favorite cook!
Keep in mind that while you’re at the old Florida Outdoor Festival there are tons of FREE things to do and see. If you would like to take a spin on a helicopter you’re more than welcome, and they were a reasonable $20 per person last year. I’m not sure if the price will be the same this year, but my brother in law and niece enjoyed seeing the massive Apopka Amphitheater from the sky! Just remember you may want to bring some extra cash for food and drinks. You can also eat outside before you hit the gates, but you’ll be missing out on some of the very best food you’ll eat!
So how much will our best entertainment value set you back? Well it depends on how many days you want to go. Friday and Saturday are $20 each in advance or $25 at the door for general admission. Concert seating is extra with pricing details on their site. If you want to go Sunday, admission is only $10 in advance. The price goes up $5 at the door each day. You can also get a three-day pass for $50 if you don’t want to purchase each day individually. When checking out the ticket prices keep in mind that the proceeds actually go to benefit the Big Potato Foundation. It’s a funny name but has an awesome back story! The mission of the Big Potato Foundation is to cultivate healthy central Florida community through charitable, creative, and cultural programs. You’ll want to check them out!
