It never ceases to amaze me just how many things I haven’t done in my lifetime. With our recent trip to the Jacksonville area, I was again amazed at something that not only I had never experienced, but neither had my wife. In particular I’m referring to the Saint Johns Ferry! I mean we have both been on ferry rides in the past when at Disney, but we had never been on a full-fledged, drive your car on a boat type of ferry ride. Some may consider it a bit slow paced, but we looked at it as all part of the adventure!
Since we were on our way to Fort George Island for the Kingsley plantation, we had a choice. We could drive around 25 miles on some great back country roads, or take a few minutes and ride the Saint Johns Ferry across the river. There was a slight fee for the ferry, but I figured we probably made up for it in the cost of fuel and time that it would have cost us to drive around the long way.
Just as we were pulling up, the ferry was heading out so we had to wait a few minutes for the ship to return. In the meantime, we scarfed down some lunch all while relaxing on the river font. When the ferry arrived we saw a steady parade of cars that were unloaded and really have to hand it to the Saint Johns ferry staff because they were very organized. Continue reading
