12 Weeks of Summer Giveaways

redbox kioskOne of the things we LOVE to do for a rainy day is to go to our local Redbox! They boys love the fact that ours is conveniently located inside Publix which means they get free cookies. Since we’re in the bakery anywhere, we generally stop and get some ice cream, and other snacks to make the day just a bit more fun. We have been pretty impressed with the selection that’s offered including
DVD and Blu-ray options. Although we’re not really into the gaming consoles, ours also seems to have a fairly decent selection of video games as well. We have gotten into the habit of returning them the next day, so we usually get one or two movies at a time and it helps stretch our budget pretty far. Much better than a family night out at the movies!

So would you like to turn one of our rainy Florida afternoons into your own personal movie festival? We are giving away a $15 Redbox Electronic gift card that’s good for any Redbox location across the US!

Ready to win a FREE $15 Redbox E-Gift Card?

HomeWorx HW-150PVR – A DVR Tivo Alternative

Posted on January 22, 2015 by Richard Paczkowski Posted in $$ Moderately Priced, Cord Cutting, Frugal Fun Funding, Gear, Nationwide, Statewide, Technology .
HomeWorx HW-150PVR DVR Tivo Alternative

HomeWorx HW-150PVR DVR Tivo AlternativeI’m not quite sure why, but I have been on a bit of a cord cutting kick lately. We haven’t had cable now in about 3 years, so I’m not quite sure why it’s on the forefront of my mind, but I figured I would pass along some great information. When we first got rid of our cable TV service and cut the cord, the hardest thing to adjust to was our missing DVR (Digital Video Recorder). We found that the HomeWorx HW-150OVR ATSC Digital Converter Box makes a pretty good DVR Tivo alternative for over the air television signals.

So how did I stumble upon this DVR Tivo alternative? Well, I was thrift shopping the other day, and saw a really good deal on a tube style TV. It was fairly large, but had a pretty incredible picture. Being the tech guy that I am, I have a really hard time passing up great deals on gadgets and gizmos. The major problem though is that it didn’t have an HDMI port, and it was made way before the digital conversion. I knew that I could get an over the air converter box that would take the digital signals that are transmitted and convert them to signals the older TV could understand, but I knew they were around $50 or so at Walmart. So add that to the cost of the old TV that just wanted to be given a new home, and it wasn’t such a great deal for the kid’s playroom.

So I started researching online. I ran across the HomeWorx HW-150PVR ATSC digital Converter Box that was around the same price as one of the converters from Walmart. So why would I buy one? Well it’s a bit different than the standard over the air converter box. It has a USB port and an HDMI out port in addition to the standard RCA style jacks! It also turns out that this unit has PVR capabilities and can be setup as a DVR Tivo Alternative with no monthly cost! Continue reading →

Amazon Fire TV Stick – Cut The Cord Already!

Posted on January 12, 2015 by Richard Paczkowski Posted in $$ Moderately Priced, Browse By Price, Cord Cutting, Technology .
Amazon Fire TV Stick Contents

Amazon Fire TV Stick ContentsJust before Thanksgiving, Amazon was running a special promotion listing an Amazon Fire TV for $19 for Amazon Prime members. We had just signed up for a Prime account to get some deals on our Christmas items so we figured it would be a great deal. The Amazon Fire TV stick apparently could go head to head with a Roku, so I figured we would give it a shot. At that price I was only out a fast food style meal with the family if it wasn’t truly worth it. So  the Mrs. ordered one and we were very excited that we would be getting a new tech toy to play with.

So a day or two went by and our FREE Amazon Prime 2 day shipping didn’t deliver our shiny new tech. It turns out we failed to see the fine print, they were on back order until mid December.. Oh well, for $19 we could wait. So life went on, and we discovered that we could actually stream Amazon Prime video via our Wii and we were happy. We were off exploring all that Amazon Prime had to offer without the Amazon Fire TV Stick.

A few weeks before Christmas, I came home to a wonderful surprise. One of the magical (yes magical), delivery companies left my Amazon Fire TV stick at my front door. For me I was like a kid right before Christmas! I let my oldest help me open the Amazon box and even he seemed excited about the contents. Our lives tend to be fairly busy and as much as it pained me to shelve the Amazon Fire TV stick, it would have to wait for a weekend. So life went on..  Saturday would be the day that the Amazon Fire TV stick would be unleashed upon my household. Continue reading →

Hoopla – A FREE Media Streaming Service

Posted on October 23, 2014 by Richard Paczkowski Posted in Browse By Price, Charlotte, Cord Cutting, Family, FREE, Hillsborough, Lee, Library, Movies, Music, Nationwide, Orange, Palm Beach, Seminole, St. Johns, Statewide, Technology, Volusia .
hoopla

hooplaAs you may recall, I recently rediscovered my local library system. After receiving my new shiny new library card, I started to checkout many of the new, high-tech services that my local library has to offer. Amongst them, I discovered Hoopla, a FREE Netflix type media streaming service! Hoopla works on computers, phones and tablets. With a few quick work arounds, I was even able to stream directly to my television! So what exactly is Hoopla?

Hoopla, simply put is just like the Netflix app that you know and love, with a major exception: it’s FREE! That’s right, included in many library memberships nationwide is the service that allows you to stream not only TV shows and music, but also audio books and music albums! So lets start off with the basics here.. In order to use Hoopla, your library must pay for the service. That’s right, it’s technically supported by tax dollars. I read a few articles explaining the benefits of the hoopla service for libraries, and in particular for audio books, it’s much cheaper for libraries to pay each time you checkout a title than to flat out purchase it for loan. Pretty cool huh? Not all libraries participate, but checkout their coverage map to see. Remember they are nationwide, so you may be surprised at who else can use the service. It’s not limited to just Florida! Remember the picture of the map shown here is static, so check th slink to be sure you see the most up to date coverage areas as they bring on new library systems.
