Light Up UCF is Back!

Posted on December 3, 2013 by Richard Paczkowski Posted in Annual Events, Browse By City, Browse By County, Browse By Price, Date Ideas, Dining, Family, FREE, Movies, Orange, Orlando, Seasonal .

light up ucfIt seems like just a few weeks ago that we brought our very little guy to Light Up UCF. I remember taking his picture by a window display and thinking that it would take forever for him to grow up into a little person. This year we stopped to take a photo at the same store and it turns out my little guy isn’t so little any more and we started a new family tradition thanks to UCF! Located right in the heart of Central Florida, Light Up UCF is an annual Christmas event that is open to the public and can be enjoyed completely FREE of charge!

We certainly learned our lesson from last year and knew that we didn’t need to pay for parking, so right of the bat we saved $5 over last year’s cost! Arriving around 7pm or so, we were already well fed, and ready for some family adventure! If you didn’t happen to scarf down a sandwich prior to arriving, don’t worry there are plenty of dining options. Remember, light up UCF is right in the middle of a college campus. You have your choice of dining options including Dominos Pizza, Jimmy Johns Subs, Burger U, Dunkin’ Donuts, and of course there are concessions! We have checked out he prices at these locations in the past and they are reasonable for the area, but remember, this is a great event to pack a picnic dinner. I think someone might look at you funny if you have a huge igloo cooler in tow, but so long as you don’t bring alcoholic beverages you should be fine. We saw two concessions at the event that were reasonable, with most items costing around $2.00. Many of the fraternities and sororities run the concession stands offering everything from popcorn to hot chocolate. Continue reading →

Get a FREE Redbox Code on us!

Posted on July 25, 2013 by Richard Paczkowski Posted in $ Inexpensive, Date Ideas, Family, FREE, Give Aways, Movies, Nationwide, Rainy Days, Statewide .
free redbox codes

free redbox codesWhen my buddy Carl and I were kids, the best part of Friday was that we knew we were headed to the Video store to rent a few movies and games. We had two in town, Tropical Video and Front Row Video that our Mom and Grandma would call and reserve our selections. They had everything from the latest VHS releases to the hottest Nintendo games. Not to mention a new format called LaserDisc that we though was fancy and pretty cool. While both of these video stores have since closed up shop quite awhile ago, my son’s generation will have a similar experience but with just a slight twist. He won’t remember the family run locations, the be kind please rewind stickers, or the examples of melted VHS tapes, but instead he will remember the ATM style, self serve kiosks of Redbox! To celebrate this revelation, we’re giving away a few Redbox Codes for FREE Redbox movie rentals, so keep reading.

Let me tell you a bit more about Redbox before I give you the details on the FREE Redbox Code. In case you haven’t ever taken the time to stop and check out a Redbox kiosk, the concept is pretty much like an ATM machine, except you get movies out instead of money. You must have a credit card, but they accept ATM/Debit Cards and pre paid credit cards as well. You navigate through a touch screen menu to make your DVD, BluRay, or video game rentals. The prices vary from platform and kiosk to kiosk. For example, DVDs are usually cheaper than BluRays and video games, but are usually under $2 per day. Wait what was that? Per day? GASP! Don’t worry it’s the same concept as the old school video rental places. You pay per day. Our local Redbox kiosk has DVDs for as little as $1 per day. If you don’t return the rental by the next day, then your credit card is charged for another evening’s rental fee. In addition you can also return your item at any Redbox kiosk location, not just the one you rented from. This is great if you’re going on a road trip! You can also reserve selections through their website to make sure they aren’t all sold out. With the exception of the high tech twist, theses kiosks are just like the old video stores from my childhood.

Outdoor Movie Night – Host Your Own!

Posted on June 1, 2013 by Richard Paczkowski Posted in $$ Moderately Priced, Family, Movies, Nationwide, Statewide .
outdoor movie night

While I have never been to a drive in movie, I have had the awesome experience of watching movies under the stars! What will certainly become a Christmas tradition, my family decided to host an outdoor movie night this past December! We had a great time and watched National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation in early December. It was such a hit we decided to do another movie night last month.

The Projector

The largest expense that we found was the actual projector rental. I’ll admit I didn’t really do my research on this one, but instead just went straight to the place my brother in law rented one for Christmas. While the price was reasonable at $60 for the weekend or $40 for a single day, their speciality wasn’t projector rentals. There was no manual, the cables needed to be replaced, and I had to plop down a $200 deposit! To top it all off, they made me sign a document stating that the replacement value of their item was $2000! This model projector can be found online for around $400! Needless to say I won’t be renting from them again.

You may want to do your research and call around to local rental companies for rates and availability. Projectors typically become scarce around big sporting events because people want to watch their favorite event on a huge screen.

If you think that you would do this quite often, you may wish to consider purchasing a projector. If you rent one five or six times, you will generally surpass the cost for an entry level projection unit. You may want to check out The Projector People.  Their website features all sorts of information on a wide variety of projectors. They offer entry level projectors up to HDMI capable HD and 3D projectors. Their site is easy to navigate and offer great pricing for an A/V novice.

Baby Movie Theatre? Thank You AMC!

Posted on March 29, 2013 by Richard Paczkowski Posted in $ Inexpensive, Family, Movies, Nationwide, Rainy Days, Statewide .

baby movie theatre detailsIf you have been an avid reader of FrugalFloridaFun.com, then you probably realize that I have been focusing on more of the outdoor type of events and family friendly things, but I wanted to take some time to share a monthly event that is available both state and nationwide for all the moms out there. In fact my wife brought this one to my attention! What about a baby movie theatre?  TheBump.com and AMC movie theatres have launched a Bring Your Baby Movie Matinee program that is just that, a baby movie theatre! This monthly showing of a selected movie is a completely family friendly movie environment. AMC relaxes the baby restrictions for their movie going patrons once a month, and everything from stroller parking, to breast feeding is allowed. It’s the closest thing you’ll probably see to an actual stand alone baby movie theatre.

This even has grown nationwide over the past few months, and is being featured in more theatres as time goes on. In Florida alone, this program has expanded from 3 to 10 theatres! The ticket prices appear to be regular matinee rates and the best part is that you can sneak in all the snacks you want! I doubt the theatre will question your Snow Caps if they are right next to a bottle of baby formula. Continue reading →
