I was very excited when my family was chosen to review ICE at Gaylord Palms and it certainly did not disappoint. The Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center is located at 6000 West Osceola Parkway, Kissimmee, FL 34746. Even the outside looked like a fun place to go:
We were told to use the Convention Center entrance for Ice at Gaylord Palms which was easy to find as the signs pointed us in the direction we needed to go. We were surprised to see that Ice at Gaylord Palms charges $18 for parking. This is not something that is included in your ticket price. (This fee is on the website, we just did not notice until after the fact.)
Once inside Ice at the Gaylord Palms, the first thing on our agenda was the Luminescence Show, located in the Emerald Plaza. Most people get to the second floor via the escalator or staircase, but if you are with someone in a wheelchair or a child who is terrified of escalators, there is also an elevator nearby. Upstairs we found several stores, but did not have the time to look around. There is also a sports bar and grill called Wreckers that looked like fun. We could see the top half of the 37 foot television screen from the window outside. Right before going into the Emerald Plaza we found a little shop for taking pictures with DreamWorks characters such as Puss in Boots from Shrek. We did go back to check out the professional pictures they took, but some of the pictures on their memory card were damaged, which included ours. We were able though to get lots of pictures with our phones and camera!
Back to Luminescence – the website describes this as a “high energy concert featuring special effects, dazzling lights, and aerial choreography”. It was amazing. They sang Christmas songs while stunts were performed over and in front of the stage. Our favorite part was when the drummer came down and hung above the stage. Ice at Gaylord Palms is so much more than just ice sculptures!
You can find the schedule for the two different stage shows online. They are included in the admission to ICE at Gaylord Palms.
Now for the main attraction: ICE at Gaylord Palms! This exhibit was built with over 2 million pounds of ice and took approximately 45 days to create. It is kept at 9 degrees, so make sure you remember your jackets, hats, and gloves. Blue parkas are available free of charge for all ages and sizes entering the exhibit. You will definitely want to grab one if you plan on going down the slides (it is long enough to sit on as you go down the slide and helps you go down easier).
The sculptures tell the story of Frosty the Snowman as well as a nativity scene. As you walk through, you won’t want to miss the ice sculpting demonstrations to see how it’s done!
After exiting ICE at Gaylord Palms, there is a concession stand that sells hot chocolate to help you warm back up. There is also a gift shop where they sell souvenirs and the picture the professionals took of you when you walked in are also available to purchase. You can also check them out at: Gaylordhotels.com/photos.
All of the employees we came in contact with were friendly as well as helpful.
