For the past seventeen years, the Port Orange Family days have been proving family friendly and FREE entertainment to the Volusia County area! This year will mark the 18th annual event and it promises to be more fun than ever! Maintained and organized by a local community trust, you’ll be hard pressed to find a better community fair and festival that offers more to the local community that the Port Orange Family Days!
With humble beginning in 1996, this annual event has grown to host over 50,000 visitors each year! What’s even more amazing is that Port Orange Family Days offers free admission, and zero parking fees! Each year the local community trust works with local businesses, organizations, and community members to help sponsor the event. You can spend hours walking around the lake at the Port Orange City Center complex just checking out the vendors and local community booths. In the past we have received free samples, coupons, and information about local businesses and groups that we would have never otherwise known about.
Another great FREE feature of Port Orange Family Days has been the traditional Movie Under The Stars! Hosted in the amphitheatre within the Port Orange City Center complex, each year there is a movie that is shown free of charge. Pull up a blanket or grab one for the amphitheatre seats early for the best seats! Refreshments are served at the amphitheatre concession and are generally reasonably priced. Don’t want to pay for snacks, feel free to bring your own! This is one movie spot that folks won’t give you dirty looks when they hear you pop a cold can of soda from a diaper bag or purse.
It seems like every year the carnival at Port Orange Family Days gets bigger and better! Be sure to checkout the lights and sounds of the ever-growing midway. Fun houses, bumper cars, and many of your favorite childhood rides will be features. Want to try your hand at a game of skill? In what is always an impressive feat of salesmanship, the carnival operators will certainly try to get you to play the many skill games offered. We generally don’t play them, but if you do, be sure to google how to win at them to help level the playing field.
If you can’t seem to get enough of the carnival rides, or are planning on being at the Port Orange Family Days for a couple of hours, be sure to pickup a ride wristband. They are $20 on select nights and keep you from having to keep shelling out cash time and time again for the individual rides. Going from memory here, most of the rides were 3-4 dollars a person I believe, so taking into account the DYETT Factor, it takes only 5 or six rides to pay for themselves. If you want a to purchase discounted wrist bands, checkout your local Walgreens locations, but be sure to purchase early, as they tend to run out fast!
The largest expense we always consider at FrugalFloridaFun.com is the cost associated with food at events. If you have a family of four, even inexpensive food prices can rack up very fast. Unfortunately the standard fair food options also come with the fair food price tags. My suggestion would be to either bring your own picnic lunch/dinner or eat before you arrive. Believe me, I’m not one to pass up fresh kettle corn, I’m just saying you may want to avoid a full meal. Last year we noticed a handful of food vendors around the lake within the community expo section. These are generally local restaurants of hot dog joints that tend to have cheaper prices than the fair variety, so be sure to checkout all your options. This is also a great savings strategy if you want to buy a bottled drink as well.
The Port Orange Family Days are so much more than a carnival and community expo. They also feature a car show, side-walk chalk decorating contests, and even a parade! I noticed on their site, they will also be featuring a pet show at the amphitheatre, local bands, and much more. If you’re looking for a great weekend event without breaking the bank, mark your calendars now as it’s coming up fast! Who knows, you might even run into Frugal Florida Fun while you’re there!
