Recently we have been testing multiple child safety products, and at the recommendation of one of our readers I reached out to SafetyTat, the makers of Child Safety Temporary tattoos. At first I didn’t quite know what to think of temporary tattoos. I mean, it’s one thing to put a wristband on my little guy, but to actually put something that is directly on his skin is a different story. We are constantly on the go, and usually in large crowds for festivals and events, and losing my child is a very real fear of mine and any parent, so I figured I would give the SafetyTat Child Safety Temporary Tattoos a try.
Once we received our SafetyTat package in the mail I had to resist the urge to put one immediately on my kid to see how it worked. We had to wait about a week or so before our real life trial: the Scotts Zellwood Sweet Corn Jamboree! Although we had multiple in the package, we didn’t want to waste any. With the child safety temporary tattoo that was custom printed with the cell phone numbers of both myself and my wife, we read the instructions before we packed up for a day of fun and excitement. Application couldn’t be easier! Just like the temporary tattoos you get in a Cracker Jack box, these apply easily with water. You simple peel the clear film off the SafetyTat Child Safety Temporary Tattoo and place design down on the location of your choice. I figured with a squirming 2 year old this would be difficult, but thankfully he was very cooperative that morning. We simply applied a damp paper towel to the paper side of the tattoo and applied slight pressure for about a minute or so. Once the paper was soaked through we carefully peeled off the backing and he was left with our contact information directly on his skin! Because we didn’t know what to expect, we decided to start this process before we even left the house. Looking back, we probably could have done it on the fly as we always have a bottle of water and paper towels with us. The instructions specifically state to be cautious of applying sunscreen prior to placing the SafetyTat Child Safety Temporary Tattoo on your child. Apparently the tats don’t stick well to the sun block.
After about an hour and a half trip in the car we finally arrived at Long & Scott Farms for the Sweet Corn Jamboree! As we usually do for our adventures, we continued our ritual of slathering down the family in sunblock and packing plenty of water into a backpack. We used SPF 50 baby sun screen and applied it very generously. We didn’t seem to have an issue applying sunscreen over the SafetyTat Child Safety Temporary Tattoo. Surprisingly enough, our little guy didn’t really pick at the tattoo, but he did seem a bit confused about why something was on his skin. It must have been comfortable because he didn’t seem to mess with it all day. After quite a few hours in the blazing Florida sun, the tattoo was still fully readable and really served its purpose. Our little guy is very social and loves to run up to other little ones his size. We received quite a few comments from others that SafetyTat Child Safety Temporary Tattoos were a great idea! It was also a good opportunity to hand out some information about our website so it was a win-win situation. Oh and by the way, women really dig men with tattoos! He was getting all sorts of attention from women of all ages!
Around 6PM or so little man and I sat down for dinner at a local restaurant after being in the hot sun, applying sunscreen, sweating, and generally being active. The SafetyTat Child Safety Temporary Tattoo was still in great shape! While waiting for dinner though, he started picking at it. Just like any other temporary tattoo, they can rub off if you actually try to get them off. Because our adventure was over, I actually started trying to remove the SafetyTat with some baby wipes. I was able to scrub a bit, but the entire tattoo wouldn’t come off! I suppose this is a good thing, as the point is to keep them on to keep your little ones safe. Checkout the picture of my half hearted attempt at removing the SafetyTat. I’m happy to report that when he took a bath later that night, the SafetyTat came off without any complications. Just a wet wash cloth and some soap did the trick. We were really surprised at the durability of these temporary child safety tattoos!
In addition to the concept of reuniting lost children with their parents, SafetyTat also has a great selection of specialized child safety temporary tattoos. For example, on their site, you can find Child Safety Tattoos warning of peanut allergies, and adverse reactions to bee stings. If you’re concerned about your child when they go on a field trip, you can even get specialized tattoos that indicate to call your child’s school. This is a great idea, especially if you’re not in the immediate vicinity to come get your little one if the school chaperone misplace your little one. In addition you can get tattoos that offer your telephone number in case of emergency or ICE. Perhaps the temporary child safety tattoos that I’m most excited about are the autism awareness options. Simply put, SafetyTat offers options such as a notice that the child is Autistic or has non verbal Autism. We think this is a great idea for parents to help communicate a message to someone who finds their loved one!
Now if you think that temporary tattoos have too short of a lifespan for your little ones, they have an “on the fly” option that lasts a bit longer. SafetyTat Child Safety Tattoos are also available in a write on version! These specialized skin appliqués do not require water to apply, and last a couple of days! You apply them, then write your phone number or message on the appliqué with the provided pen or a Sharpie marker. This could be the perfect solution if you are with a larger group of kids and adults that may not have had them printed in advance.
So what is the cost of a SaftetyTat Child Safety Temporary Tattoo? They are very reasonable! A 24 pack of the customized child safety tattoos are $20.99 with shipping of $6.95. A Total of $27.94, or $1.17 each. The longer lasting write on appliqués are $10.99 for a 10 pack and $6.95 for shipping, making them $2.99 each. Remember they last longer, and if you order more than one 6 pack, this cost per safety tat goes down because you get more items to factor out with the shipping and handling. Don’t worry though, if you have both a little boy and a girl, they have options for half and half designs, meaning half are geared more for boys, some geared more for girls.
In our actual field tests, we found SafetyTat Child Safety Temporary Tattoos to be a great option to help protect our family. Lets face it, distractions happen. That doesn’t make you a bad parent, but if there is something you can do to help return your child to you quickly and safely in the event they get lost why wouldn’t you want to take advantage of it?
